The sober coldness of Cain consists in conceiving responsibility as proceeding from freedom or in terms of a contract. But responsibility for another comes from what is prior to my freedom. It does not allow me to constitute myself into an 'I think,' substantial like a stone, or like a heart of stone, existing in and for oneself. -- Levinas, 'God and Philosophy' We are happy to propose the following conference program. Many thanks to all those who submitted abstracts for presentation at the conference. The quality and ambition of each proposal was impressive, and the broad range of topics covered promises a dynamic engagement with Levinas's philosophy of primordial responsibility. As each final paper is received, it will be posted under the presentations section for reading prior to the conference. This should assist in promoting direct dialogue during each round-table presentation in keeping with Levinas's emphasis on the face-to-face.
LEVINAS: ETHICS OF ENCOUNTER: Curated by Sandra Buckley and Lorraine Oades The exhibit, opening at 7pm, September 16, presents the work of Raphael Lozano Hemmer, Lynn Hughes and Simon Laroche, Ingrid Bachmann, Freda Guttman, Monique Moumblow, Francois Lemieux, Lisa Vinebaum, Tom Haigh and Noemie da Silva in conjunction with the Centennial Conference on Levinas and Law. It is not difficult to understand why a Law School would be host to a Centennial Conference for a philosopher driven by questions of justice, responsibility and ethical peace. But why art in the Law School Atrium? What connection between the art works installed in this space and the conference papers being delivered elsewhere on campus? For Levinas the aesthetic and art are intimately linked to the practice of ethics and justice – and it is significant that for Levinas these are not just concepts to be thought through but responsibilities translated into practice. Everybody is invited to participate in the Forum, which will take place in the Atrium of the Mcgill Law Faculty on Tuesday September 20th from 6pm-8pm. For the reading pack and more information click here. Registration information was sent some weeks ago to those whose abstracts have been accepted for presentation (and possible publication). If you submitted an abstract but have not yet heard from the conference, or if you have not yet re-confirmed your intention to present your paper, please e-mail James Parker, conference administrator. Canadian and international graduate students should also have received travel subsidy information. |
